Session Control

If you are logged in as a Moderator, your hotComm window includes a Session Control toolbar. You can use it to control the features available to the Users in the session. The toolbar settings do not affect Presenters or other Moderators.

To control these features, click the button in the Session Control toolbar. To release them, click again.
Keyboard, Posting, Seeing Other Uses
Keyboard Privatize Keyboard.

Disable public keyboard typing and WAV sounds. If selected: Moderators and CL Presenters can see typing from users, but users cannot see typing from other users. Users cannot send pre-defined sounds (the ear with music button).

Use to reduce off-topic comments (such as "no sound") or to hold questions for the end (Moderators can copy and paste them back into the transcript when its time for questions.)

Note: to disable all typing by Public users, select both Privatize Keyboard and PM Disable.
Private Messages PM Disable.

Disable Private Messages and Private Sessions. If disabled: Users cannot send Private Messages to other users, or initiate Private Sessions. They can send Private Messages to Moderators/Presenters, and join Private Sessions initiated by Moderators/Presenters.
hotWeb Isolate Users.

Hide other users. If selected: Users cannot see other users in the Invited List.
Combinations:

In-Out-Out Only Moderators see typing Moderators and Presenters see typing from users. Users don't see typing from other users. This is commonly used in webinars to avoid distractions.
In-Out-In Privatize Keyboard and Isoluate users Users don't see typing from other users, and don't see each other in the Invited List. This is commonly used when you want each user to be unaware of other users in the room, such as in the hotComm Support Room.
In-In-Out Privatize Keyboard and disable Private Messages Users can see each other, but are not able to type at all to anyone, except to send Private Messages to Moderators and CL Presenters.
Out-In-In Disable Private Messages and Isolate USers Users cannot see each other in the Invited List, and are not able to type at all. This is rarely used.
Note: Using Privatize Keyboard, PM Disable, Isolate Users, and the Microphone disable options at the same time effectively means that Public users are aware of the Moderator/Presenters only, and can interact only with them.

Miscellaneous
Whiteboard Whiteboard, hotWeb, Gimmickry.

If disabled:
  • Public users cannot initiate the Whiteboard, and cannot use Transparent Collaborator to draw or type on someone else's Whiteboard.

  • Public users cannot use the hotWeb toolbar to push web pages.

  • Gimickry is set off and cannot be enabled. See Gimickry.
File Transfer File Xfer Disable.

If disable: Public users cannot transfer files by dragging and dropping them into the message area.

Independent file transfers between full hotComm clients are not blocked.
hotCam (Camera) Camera and DD Disable.

Disable hotCam and Dynamic Desktop. If disabled: Public users cannot send hotCam screenshots, initiate Dynamic Desktop, or use any functions of the hotCam icon.
Webcam Video Disable.

Disable Webcam. If disabled: Public users cannot use their Webcams.
Webcam Record Disable.

Disable recording of any part of the session. If disabled: Public users will not be able to:

  • Record audio
  • Record session
  • Save transcripts
  • Email transcripts
  • Copy from the transcript.

Microphone
Microphone on left Normal/Push-to-talk Toggle (left microphone button).

Change between normal microphone mode (hands-free) to push-to-talk mode.
  • Normal (left microphone button out): Public users click their microphone button to turn their mic on or off. The microphone stays on until turned off.

  • Push-to-talk (left microphone button in): Public users hold their microphone button down while they talk. When they release the button, their mic is turned off.
Microphone on right Open Mic Disable (right microphone button).

Allow an open session with multiple microphones on, or restrict it to only one microphone on at a time.
  • Open session (right mic button out): Multiple people can speak at once.

  • One at a time (right mic button in): Only one Public user can speak at a time. When the Public user clicks their mic button, the Moderator/Presenter sees a request from that person to speak.
Common Microphone Combinations:

In-In Normal with Open Mic Disable Disable all microphones. Only Moderators/Presenters use the microphone, Users have a Red X through the microphone and sounds button in middle toolbar
In-Out Push-to-talk mode Allow anyone to use their mic, in push-to-talk mode.
Out-In Users can request mic Only one person can use the mic at a time. When a user clicks the mic, Moderators get a message "Would you allow 'screen-name' to put on their microphone?"
Out-Out Normal Open MIc Allow anyone to use their mic, in always-on mode.
