Remote Control of a Java Client

With hotComm Support Pro, you can remotely control a Java client.

Requirements:

  • hotComm Support Pro license, which appears in your Registration Profile Information as Injectible Dynamic Desktop.

  • Online-Direct connection status, with a configuration that allows both incoming and outgoing TCP connections. See Firewalls, Ports and Routers.

  • Peer-to-peer connection. You cannot control a Java client through a room.

  • The IDD1.EXE module must be installed in your hotComm/WEB/IM-live/ folder. It is distributed separately from the hotComm software downloads. IDD1.EXE is a self-extracting installer that contains the files the Java client needs.

Installation

  1. Install and register hotComm Standard/Pro, if you have not done so already. See the Downloads area of our website for software and instructions.

  2. Purchase and apply a hotComm Support Pro license. See the Buy Now! area of our website. Note that this feature is enabled during the trial period.

  3. Ask your 1stWorks sales representative for these items:

    • A copy of the IDD1.EXE module. Put this module in your hotComm/WEB/IM-Live/ folder.

    • A copy of the hotComm Java applet page (DEFAULT_ONL.HTM) that includes a link to launch the remote control. If you want to use it, put this page in your hotComm/WEB/IM-Live/ folder, or copy the link into your existing DEFAULT_ONL.HTM.

  4. Configure your hotComm installation to allow incoming TCP connections through a specific port, as described in Firewalls, Ports and Routers. Your hotComm connection status will become Online-Direct.

Working with Remote Control

  1. The Java client connects to you, using your IM-Live address. To see your address, select Registration, then Profile Information, under IM-Live. An example link is: http://support.im-live.net/im-live/.

  2. Start the remote control, using either of these techniques:

    • You start the remote control.

      1. You right-click on their name in Invited List and select Request Remote Dynamic Desktop.

      2. Your customer sees a request to allow you to control their desktop.

      3. This launches an installer that presents the customer with a Terms of Use statement that they accept, before they run IDD1.EXE, which installs the files they need. IDD1.EXE is run from your computer.

      4. After the files are installed, remote control starts.

    • The customer starts the remote control.

The user runs IDD1.EXE directly, to install the files they need. They can click a link in the Java client background window ("powered by hotComm"), or they can open another browser window and type this address: http://yourwebiste.im-live.com/im-live/IDD1.EXE.

  3. You see a window that says Loading Dynamic Desktop. Wait while it loads.

  4. Once the remote control session is established, you can control their computer. They can also act on it.

  5. To release control, you click Yield Control, or close the Dynamic Desktop window, or right-click the Dynamic Desktop icon and select Close.

The customer can throw you out by pressing both Shift keys in sequence: left-Shift then right-Shift.

Notes:

  • The remote control suppresses the customer's Windows background during the session.

  • This may be slower than you expect. We recommend that you talk to the customer by telephone during this process, so that you can confirm what is happening.
