Update hotComm CL (English language)

An update replaces files in your existing hotComm CL installation. You do not need to uninstall before updating, although with hotComm CL, you can uninstall the prior version first if you wish.

Note for Kaspersky users -- please configure Kaspersky for hotComm again after you upgrade, per our instructions at www.hotcomm.com/FAQ/FAQ_kaspersky.asp

Please close all programs (including hotComm CL) before starting the update.

Click to download the hotcomm CL update Do not uninstall before updating.
Select Open or Run, not Save. .
You MAY need to re-start your computer after some updates.
Delete Temporary Internet Files after updating.


If you ran the update and still get a message saying you need to update, it usually means that you have a copy of the old installer saved on your computer. Follow instructions below and try again.


How to Update

To update hotComm CL:

  1. Delete all copies of the old installer (hclsetup.exe) that may have been saved on your computer.      How to ...

  2. Delete Temporary Internet files.       How to ...

  3. Click the Update button. When you get the File Download window, select Open or Run instead of Save.
    Click to download the hotcomm CL update Do not uninstall before updating.
    Select Open or Run, not Save. .
    You MAY need to re-start your computer after some updates.

  4. Run the installer (hclsetup.exe). If you selected Run or Open, it starts automatically. Follow instructions in the installation screens.

  5. At the end of the installation program, hotComm starts.

    If your privacy or security products challenge hotComm, always allow hotComm to access any site.

Security and Privacy product note: Check your privacy and security products to make sure that they allow hotComm to access the Internet, and also allow you to access these addresses: hotComm.com, ezPeer.net, 1stWorks.com. For information about some firewall products, see Firewalls.


About the Update Notice

The Update notice means that your copy of hotComm is not updated to the revision required for the room you want to join.

Your hotComm revision number is shown on the top line of your hotComm window.

If you ran the update, but get the "Update required" notice again, you probably have an old copy of the installer saved on your computer. (Windows is running the saved copy instead of the new one you just downloaded.) To fix this, delete any saved copies of hclsetup.exe, delete Temporary Internet Files, and try again.


How to Delete Saved Installers

Find and delete all copies of the installation program (hclsetup.exe):

  1. Open the Windows Start menu. Select Search or Find.

  2. Select Files and folders, and type hclsetup*.exe as the filename. Click Search.

  3. Highlight all files that were found and press the Delete key.

  4. Close the search or find windows.

hotComm Auto Updates

Dial-up and Satellite users should disable hotComm auto updating, for speed reasons. To do this:

  1. Start hotComm CL.
  2. Click Options, then Software Update Setup.
  3. In the About hotComm window, uncheck Allow Auto Update and Allow Auto Download.

How do I delete Temporary Internet Files (clear cache)?

Instructions are provided for deleting temporary Internet Files (clearing cache) through Windows Control Panel, Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, Opera, AOL and Netscape.

  • Windows Control Panel - delete Temporary Internet Files:

    Windows Vista
    1. Click the Windows Start menu.
    2. Select Control Panel, (or Settings and then Control Panel).
    3. Select Internet Options, (or Network and Internet Connections and then Internet Options).
    4. Under Browsing History, click the Delete button.
    5. In the Delete Browsing History window, click the Delete Files button.
    6. When asked if you are sure you want to delete all temporary Internet files, click Yes.
    7. To close the windows, click Close, then Ok

    Windows XP
    1. Click the Windows Start menu.
    2. Select Control Panel, (or Settings and then Control Panel).
    3. Select Internet Options, (or Network and Internet Connections and then Internet Options).
    4. Select the General tab.
    5. In the Temporary Internet Files section, click the Delete Files button.
    6. Do not check the clear Offline Content box. Click Ok.
    7. Close the Internet Properties and Control Panel windows.



  • Internet Explorer - delete Temporary Internet Files:

    Internet Explorer 7.0
    1. Open Internet Explorer.
    2. Select the Tools menu.
    3. Select Internet Options.
    4. Under Browsing History, click the Delete button.
    5. In the Delete Browsing History window, click the Delete Files button.
    6. When asked if you are sure you want to delete all temporary Internet files, click Yes.
    7. To close the windows, click Close, then Ok.

    Internet Explorer 6.0
    1. Open Internet Explorer.
    2. Select the Tools menu.
    3. Select Internet Options.
    4. Select the General tab.
    5. In the Temporary Internet Files section, click the Delete Files button.
    6. Do not check the clear Offline Content box. Click Ok.
    7. Click Ok to close the Tools window.



  • FireFox (Mozilla) - clear cache

    Firefox 3.0
    1. Open FireFox (Mozilla).
    2. Click the Tools menu.
    3. Click Clear Private Data.
    4. Check Cache. Note that any other checked items will also be cleared, so un-check any that you do not want to clear.
    5. Click the Clear Private Data Now button.

    Firefox, older versions
    1. Open FireFox (Mozilla).
    2. Click the Tools menu.
    3. Click Options.
    4. Click Privacy.
    5. Click the Clear button for Cache.



  • Safari - clear cache

    Safari 3.1.2
    1. Open Safari.
    2. Click the Edit menu.
    3. Click Empty Cache....
    4. When asked if you are sure you want to empty the cache, click the Empty button.



  • Opera - clear cache

    Opera 9.5.2
    1. Open Opera.
    2. Click the Tools menu.
    3. Click Delete Private Data.
    4. In the Delete Private Data window, click Detailed Options.
    5. Check Delete Entire Cache. Note that any other checked items will also be cleared, so un-check any that you do not want to clear.
    6. Click Delete.



  • AOL - clear browser cache:

    AOL 9.0
    1. Click Settings.
    2. Select the Index tab, and click Internet [Web] Options.
    3. Under Browsing History, where it says to Delete temporary files, cookies, saved passwords, and web form information, click Delete.
    4. Wait while the files are deleted, then click OK.


    AOL 7.0
    1. In Keyword, enter: PREFERENCES. Or, on the Settings menu on the AOL toolbar, click Preferences.
    2. In the Organization section of the Preferences window, click Internet Properties (WWW).
    3. In the Temporary Internet Files section, click Delete Files.
    4. Click OK.



  • Netscape - clear browser cache

    1. Open Netscape.
    2. Click the Edit menu.
    3. Click Preferences.
    4. Click Advanced. It expands to show a list of options.
    5. Click Cache.
    6. Click Clear Memory Cache.
    7. Click Clear Disk Cache.
    8. Click OK.
  • Netscape Download Manager - remove installation file

    1. Click the Tools menu.
    2. Click Download Manager.
    3. Highlight the hotComm installation program and click Remove from list.
    4. Close the Download Manager window.
